Cole Truck & Haul have been operating their business since the mid 1980s. For more than twenty years they've been delivering goods for most major industries in the nation, with business booming as they traversed the country, in all kinds of weather, for all kinds of clients. During the heady times from 2002 to 2007, Cole was a top rated accounts receivable mastermind of the trucking industry. Very few customers were behind on their bills, and those customers who were late turned in their overdue payments within an acceptable time frame. The money was flowing, and times were great. But a short year later, in the fall of 2008, when the United States economy took a nosedive and businesses both small and large began to feel the pinch on their pocketbooks, those that used to make their demands had suddenly and largely gone silent. Business slowed down. Worse still, it was noticed by Cole in early 2008 that even though most of their loyal customers were on time with their payments, there were a few late bloomers who were starting to spread the disease. And as spring turmed to summer and summer into the early days of fall, Nathan Lambert, CEO of Cole felt a chill go down his spine whenever he would look at the weekly A/R reports. There was a growing list of clients who now owed them back debt.He had gone to his administrators and asked them what the problem had been. Were they doing something wrong or different when it came to reaching out to delinquent accounts? By his bookkeepers records, this wasn't the case. Perhaps he was losing his customers to his competitor, who seemed to offer very low prices with no guarantee of quality or performance, and these clients who were in debt to his company had possibly disappeared leaving him stranded. They couldn't afford to pay him their debt, but they could afford a lesser service, maybe. So he did the necessary research and, after discussions with friends in the same field, he realised that no, his customers hadn't gone anywhere else. The had just gone!.This current state-of-affairs was causing Nathan Lambert to have some very restless nights. There were goods to ship, employees to pay, trucks to repair and maintain, and continuous overheads that were very extensive when compared to the funds (or lack of) that were incoming. After work he would confide in his wife, Tracy, and neither were unable to stop the constant worry over the lack of funds.""I have a bad feeling, Lin,"" he'd sadly say to his wife.""What could you do differently?"" she would say.Nathan would stare off into the distance, and then slowly close his eyes. He could see the fleet of trucks he had purchased over the years. He could see them traveling, bringing goods to all of his clients. But somewhere, a haze would form over his fleet and the vast number of vehicles would disappear to but a few. Why couldnt he work out how to resolve this financial problem with his business?""I know what it is,"" said Nathan. ""For way too long I've been relying solely on profits received from invoices. I've let too many of our customers go too long without paying on their bills."" Tracy would look at her husband lovingly, and holding his hand would say 'It's such a harsh economy these days and our clients must be having difficulty meeting their responsibilities'.""Tracy was trying so hard to support her husband in these worrying times, while Nathan was weighed down with the worry of how he was going to handle this situation he found himself in.The next day Nathan strolled into his office and was determined to sit down and make every phone call to every client who had owed Cole money. Now, it wasn't the most efficient way to spend a day as a chief executive, what he really needed to be doing was to be overseeing all of the other intricacies of shipment and delivery and reaching out to prospective clients or retraining his sales team to do the same. Even though he was doing something to help his company, he knew he had folks on salary to do just this thing. A waste of time - a waste of money - he had the best intentions, but all the while Nathan was realising just how much trouble he was in.After a half day of contacting debtors in vain - they dodged his calls or promised to call back at worst or made minimal interest-only payments at best - he was about to throw in the towel when his secretary Julieerley knocked at his door.

""Can I have a word with you Nathan?"" she queried, standing in the doorway.

""Of course Julie, please come in."" Nathan leaned back in his chair and looked expectantly at Julieerely.""Well Nathan, this afternoon I did some research, trying to work out how we're going to get out of this mess."" She opened up a folder she had been carrying and pulled out a small wad of papers, placing them on the desk in front of him.""Have you ever heard of factoring?"" Julieerley asked.""It does sound vaguely familiar. What is it?"" he said. She began, ""Well, it's really very simple. So basically, factoring invoices would enable us to get paid on the nose for loads that we haul.""Nathan interrupted ""Immediately?"".""Yes, immediately,"" she continued, ""In a nutshell, it's pretty easy. We can have an expert account manager review our numbers and help us complete a company profile. That profile will also include investigating our accounts receivable aging reports, our existing customer credit limits and so on. Additionally, the factoring will help to determine the creditworthiness of our customers independent of their credit history with our business. It provides a very broad view.Nathan replied cautiously ""I see - and what happens then?Well, after their review, and were approved for a factoring contract, we can negotiate terms and conditions. Theres a lot of flexibility depending on the business volume and credit histories. This company tells us what the cost will be to purchase factoring for our accounts receivable. Once we arrive at a mutual agreement, the funding begins.Nathan was still a little concerned. He leaned forward in his chair and studied the paperwork very closely.""I don't know, Julie - it just sounds too good to be true"", Nathan said quietly.""Now, now, I know, I thought the same thing. But really, they have guaranteed us experts that do all the legwork, which would free us up here to focus on our clients in good standing and marketing, all that good stuff. And they're flexible Nathan,"" she underlined a paragraph on the paper before him.""Just how flexible?"" he asked.""It seems that they personalize their factoring charges so that the amount they're prepared to work with is commensurate with our client's debt and our needs. It only takes 2 to 4 days for this to be figured out. """"That sounds pretty good, seeing as we tapped ourselves out with bank loans last year to repair the fleet and money sure is tight. It's imperative that we keep the business rolling as usual, and every day we go unpaid we're getting closer and closer to dealing with some serious issues in both the short term and the long term,"" said Nathan. He took a deep breath and looked at his secretary with something she recognized as hope.""Precisely. I think this might just be a way out of the trouble we're in with these folks who owe us money.""Nathan took a moment to think about this solution, and agreed with his secretary. The clients who owed them money were long standing friends and professional resources of Cole. They didn't want to throw away these relationships because they were having trouble paying their bills now. Nathan knew that the economy had taken a hit and he knew that it would probably be a long time before things started to look up again. If he didn't handle these debtors in the right way, that unknown amount of time could spell disaster for all of them. He didn't want to lose business but he also didn't want to lose any more money.""Well, let me think about this tonight Julie, thank you."" Julie nodded, stood up and left the office feeling that she had helped her employer keep on his shirt and hers too.Nathan stayed at his desk for a long time, looking over the details they hadn't discussed during their meeting. He wondered if there might be other problems freight factoring could help Cole Truck & Haul with? With his pencil gliding down the sheet he noticed that the factoring company could help fray the cost of fuel with fuel discount cards and fuel advances. Nathan was surprised: it said that his company could get up to fifty percent cash advances on load pickups. As a man who hated binding contracts with no room to breathe, he was pleased to see that this factoring company would not make him sign a long term contract, would not make him pay any sign up fees and there was no minimum volume required.""Well, I'll have to tell Allan about this,"" Nathan muttered to himself.Nathan's son-in-law, Allan, loved the idea behind Cole and highly respected his father-in-law for having such great business sense, that two years ago he got his capital together and started his own transportation company. Nathan knew then what struggles Allan would face but he encouraged him nonetheless. With the economy the way it was, if an established company such as Cole was struggling then the little guys, like Allan, were going to be in even more trouble. But, maybe the answer for both of them was in freight factoring, and Nathan was going to find out very soon.A few short months later, after completing the application process, having the legal experts review his credit history, accounts receivable, and statements, finally Nathan was beginning to find his way out of the hole his debtors had created for him. They took on reasonable factoring purchase contracts and stopped spending their precious man hours scrambling to collect debt. They used that time to refocus their efforts in being competitive in new territories. Nathan looked back on the dismal months of life before freight factoring and almost shuddered at the thought. Had he missed the boat on this one, he probably wouldn't be in business today.

Factoring in the Future of a Trucking Business: A Story Albert Rogers let the phone ring on his desk. His morning coffee cooled and his cigarette smoked away in the tray: Albert is thinking, and pondering the biggest decision he's ever had to make for his trucking business. Rogers Trucking Company was at a turning point of growth and Albert had to decide if signing with a factoring company was the right way forward.

More than forty years ago Albert's father had started this business working as an owner-operator and eventually growing Rogers Trucking Company into a fifteen trailer fleet. Yes, they had survived some very difficult times when it appeared like they might go under, and even Albert's mother had jumped into the cab at times to make hauls. His father had worked long enough to see the price of hires drop dramatically during the recession and to see the explosion of fuel prices afterwards. But now things were different: the company was in Albert's hands and he needed to ensure that this business would be left in great shape for his sons.

There just never seemed to be enough money to go around, and certainly no spare cash, but to move his company successfully into the future he needed a steady and reliable cash flow. He had employees to pay. They had families and household bills too. Some of the refrigerated trailers were in need of repairs and he felt to stay competitive it was also a good idea to invest in specialized haulers to be ready for the constant requests he was getting for loads of new energy and agriculture equipment. Every time he had to turn down a request, Rogers Trucking looked weak in a very strong market.

His father would have told him to wait and to take his time adding on new technology. Albert allowed himself a good hard chuckle. He remembered when his father was totally against installing GPS units in the cabs. His Dad would say ""Why on earth do you need some stranger telling you to get off the exit that everyone knows has been there for years? He smiled to himself as he remembered his father poking fun at the other drivers who switched to automatic, even though automatic was quite obviously more efficient (though less manly). He knew his father's days were long gone and new technology was very important for the business, like having Qualcomm to reduce communication time for bills of lading.

Albert knew he was right in his forward thinking. What would be the next step for Rogers Trucking? And how would he be able to afford it? Funding was all tied up in the mortgage for the office and garage and in the fuel bills. Thankfully he'd just finished paying off the bank loan for the installation of satellite radio in the trucks.

But was factoring the answer? There was a lot he didnt understand about the process. It sounded a lot like ninth grade algebra which just didnt feel like it belonged as part of the trucking business. Factoring companies buy your invoices and manage your accounts receivable for a certain percentage of the invoiced amount. In return, the factoring company pays the trucking business straight away, providing immediate cash flow for the business to pay staff, purchase fuel, and do any repairs or maintenance. Without the assistance of factoring, you have to wait for customers to send you the payment which is often 30 days late. In those 30 days, a trucking company cant pay its bills and employees in invoices.

Now it was time for Albert to do his homework. He had heard of companies charging for same day money transfers, advancing a percentage of the money owed to your business, while the rest is held in a private account if the bill wasn't paid within sixty or more days. Worse still, if the customer defaulted on payment, the factoring company takes it out of the money supposedly coming to you! He'd even heard about some companies putting you onto a sliding percentage scale regardless of any previously signed contracts for possibly 3% or 7%, and there you are now with 10% coming as a charge to you out of the freight bill. His colleague, Ronnie, who owned a trucking company in Missouri, was nearly destroyed by a factoring company who charged him the full freight bill on top of the fees for factoring. Well, what was the point of going to a factoring company if there was shady business like that going on?

However, it all turned out to be very simple. When he called the factoring companies he discovered they were very open about their business practices, and very friendly and helpful. Their customer service actually knew things about their company and spoke in nice clear English so he could understand what was being explained. He didnt mind signing an exclusive contract. He liked the idea of a long term commitment so he knew he wouldnt have to bother going back and forth to different companies and wasting time filing more forms. Nobody charged him for credit checks and they offered him a fuel advance on the pick-up of the load. In fact there were a few companies who offered him a non-recourse factoring program, and this was exactly what he had been hoping for. He was more than happy with the figures he was offered in percentage terms on the freight bills. It was good money.

For Albert it was quite a relief to be dealing with the factoring company. They were extremely helpful and more personable than the bank staff. He was relieved to note that the factoring companies understood the trucking business and discussed business with him like a respected client, not like someone looking for a handout. The factoring companies were not interested in his credit nor the financial problems his father had experienced in the past. Factoring was based on the credit of his customers and on their reliability which worked well for Albert because he and his father had built up good strong relationships over decades with their list of clients. He knew immediately that there would not be any problems when they were contacted by the factoring company regarding their invoices. His clients wouldnt think poorly of Rogers Trucking and the factoring companies appeared capable of handling the accounts receivable in the same polite manner that his father had used over the years.

Albert stepped out of his office to let his secretary know to expect the arrival of the factoring contract shortly. He felt exhilarated by the new possibilities that would make the future of the company fun again and put the stress of the difficult times behind him. He suddenly realized that, with this new cash flow, he could actually expand Rogers Trucking Company and who knows, move into Canada, which had always been his dream. He was a happy man again knowing that he had just made a decision which would guarantee the success of his business and his sons wouldn't be inheriting a financial mess.

Trucking Factoring  Articles

So It is not a loan? asked Ray Davis, reclining back into his chair and crossing his legs. The woman sitting across the desk from Ray smiled at him, shaking her head. No, not exactly, she said.Ray Davis owned a small trucking company, and his business had recently fallen on difficult times. Certainly the trucking business can be an extremely profitable venture, and for many years it had been that way for Darryl. He named his business Castro Trucking, named after Kyle and Enrique, his two grandfathers. Both of these men had been very hardworking and had set a great example for Darryl.Disaster had struck half a year ago, when two trucks in Darryls fifteen truck fleet went down. One was a roll-over and ended up in the trucking graveyard: the other was involved in a serious and costly accident. The financial security of Darryl's company relied on his full fleet on fifteen being on the road, and missing two trucks was just devastating . In addition, he just didn't have the available cash to buy a new truck, plus repair the other one.A big problem a lot of trucking companies came across was how bills were paid in the industry. Waiting a month or longer for bills to be paid was quite normal. In the long run, this wasnt an issue, but if problems arose, you could find yourself in trouble.Ray was an excellent business man, and he certainly hadn't done anything wrong. Certain events had occurred that he couldn't possibly have predicted, and now he had to find a way to protect his business and prevent it from ultimate devastation. And that's why he found himself across the desk from this woman. Ray knew she was employed by a Factoring company and that her name was Connie. He had accidentally come across her company one night when he was working late, searching the internet to see if there was some solution to his financial dilemma. She sat there now, and explained. Its not a loan, we purchase your accounts receivable. We're not giving you finance to be repaid later: we're purchasing something from you, and when you can you can buy it back. This is a win-win situation: we're protected from a total loss, and you're protected from the ridiculous fees and charges you'd have to pay if you borrowed from a bank.Ray nodded. It sounded perfect - perhaps too good?.Connie laughed. I'm not sure that you believe me, she chuckled.Oh no, I do: it just sounds too good to be true. I actually thought I might end up losing my business.Connie nodded. Yes, we get a lot of that. There's no way we want to see you lose your business. You work hard, youve put everything you can into it. Sometimes you need help. That's why we do what we do.In any case, thank you for coming to see me.Its right down the road, usually we do it all online, but I didnt mind swinging on by today, said Connie with a smile. Let's work out a solution to your problem. And right there and then they created a business profile. Ray completed the form, with Connie offering advice as needed.

The completed profile gave Connie and her company all the information they needed on Darryl's business, and with this information they would determine if this business would in fact be suitable for Factoring. Unfortunately, not all companies are. Some were beyond factoring special brand of help, and sometimes things werent even dire enough for it. As Ray completed his form, Connie listened to his story and she felt quite sure he would be the ideal candidate for Factoring.Connie took the completed form and placed it in her briefcase. She then stood, reached across the desk and shook Darryls hand. He stood before they shook as well, and then smiled. Ray walked Connie to the door where they said 'Goodbye', then he went back into his office. His employees were there, seven who worked in the office, and as he sat behind his desk once more he heard the familiar clack of fingers on keyboards, the electronic whine of the copy machine. He leaned back and closed his eyes. He felt so drained: he had been flailing helplessly for so long, he just knew his business was going to collapse and probably take him with it. Talking to Connie though, learning about factoring, it felt like a weight had been lifted from his shoulders. He relaxed into his chair, running his hand through his thick black hair with its telling streaks of grey. The long nights, where he couldnt sleep. The sudden panic attacks, not matter where he was. He could feel it all fading away. He wasnt out of the woods yet, there was still a lot of work to be done, but he could feel it. He was there, he was on the right path, and he was working to make things right. His mind wandered back to the very beginning, when he first started his business. At twenty-two and straight out of school he had opened a restaurant. It had been really successful. Offering home cooking in his own hometown, his business had really prospered. But it wasn't what he really wanted to do. He wasn't passionate about the food industry. He thought about it for a long time, then decided it was time to sell his restaurant. He took half a year off, and in that time he thought to start Castro Trucking. So he did it. Once again he built a company from the ground up. He had been successful. And then the trucks went down, and his success looked to be in flux. He was nearing fifty. He didnt think he had it in him, to save this company. But giving up wasn't part of his personality either.

The idea of cutting his losses, shutting down, laying off his workers, it actually made him sick some nights. He didn't want to quit - both for himself and for his staff members. And now it seemed as though he wouldn't have to - all because of Factoring. Ray opened his eyes, sat forward, turned his computer on. He had things to do. There would be plenty of time later to be thankful, but for now it was time to get back to work.

Precisely why Truck Companies Employ Factoring Companies.

As the owner of your own business, you may be more than knowledgeable already of the difficulty in making certain that capital matters do not become a problem down the line. Anyway, the most unfortunate thing that can potentially transpire for your business is to find yourself swept up in a long and perplexing circumstance that leaves you forever trying to find the cash you necessitate on an ongoing basis.

For any type of business enterprise in this position, the challenge can come for waiting for work to clear up and actually be compensated into your balance. Statements, checks, and the like can take a while to actually to beprocessed which can certainly leave you with momentary capital issues. Thankfully, there are options out there for industries to look into-- and just one of these is factoring companies.

Factoring agencies will, in trade for your invoices, supply you with the cash immediately to ensure you don't have to fret about the waiting time span which could make paying out the expenses and purchasing toolsmore tough. With this form of setup, invoice factoring can end up being exceptionally valuable for lots of businesses who have to avoid a money lure which they have found themselves in.

Because, basing on the volume of the work, it can take up to 60 days for many companies to get paid then it's significant to blanket your own back and definitely not leave yourself money short to pay the expenses. After all, how many establishments have two months cash flow just occupying there to cover all their expenditures till they make money?

This is most notably correct of trucking agencies. They generally manage tons of statements which means a substantial volume of collection period entails business owner themselves. Making an effort to get paid in time can eventually become an incredible inconvenience and this is why you utilize truck factoring agencies who are pleased to help out truckers exclusively.

As we all determine, trucking is an remarkably big market with numerous companies out there employing hundreds of vehicle drivers. Regrettably, several of these drivers end up in money predicaments considering that they are still anticipating work from six weeks earlier to actually compensate them. When this is the circumstance for a truck agency, resorting to factoring agencies for support maybe the most recommended alternative left.

This implies that a truck company can pay off the salaries of the staff, keep all the vehicles filled with gas and continue to go up, progress and expand without always waiting for the cash which is taking too prolonged to come in. Trucking Establishments running without a factoring program used are leaving themselves at significant risk, as rivals cash out promptly and carry on to grow.

There's genuinely nothing to be worried about when it comes to working with a Factoring company-- they typically aren't like a financial institution or an individual who is going to leave you with a big pile of financial obligation to pay back. You give them genuine invoices from work you have already accomplished , you are merely expediting the repayment process.

In the Usa, where truck companies succeed, factoring firms are not considered accepting loan of in any capacity. This confidential deal then makes it possible for both parties to profit and indulge in a comfortable future-- it gives the factoring business a guaranteed asset of revenue to include in the list and it supplies the trucking business the needed finances that they sweated to earn.

The trucking establishment provides their accounts to the factoring business. The trucking factoring provider then take the payment amounts from the trucking company's clients. Factoring has been all around for hundreds of years and has been used for several years by several diverse business sectors-- but none more so than truckers. While you might miss out on a small part of the money, something like 1-3 % depending on who you team up with, it indicates that you are acquiring the resources today and can actually start off setting the funds to perform.

Once and for all, an IOU or an invoice is not actually going to cover costs, is it? For trucking enterprises when the hard earned cash can be very good one day and gone the next, it's up to the vehicle drivers to work sensibly and to make certain they are leaving themselves with a significant amount of time and money to get through the week until they are paid for once more.

So the next period your trucking business is having some short-term cash flow concerns and you are shelling out way too much time chasing sluggish paying clients, why not start thinking about utilizing a factoring companies as a manner to get your cash and give yourself a more convenient future in the eyes of your trucking team and your bank balance?

Bank Loans

Finance through a bank loan is the normal, or traditional, way of financing your business. These loans can be a life-saver, but they're not always available to every business. For example, a fairly newly established business simply may not have the assets to readily get a loan from a bank, even if they do, the standard collateral for a business loan is the business itself, which means that if you cannot make your loan payment, you risk losing your entire business. Plus, the amount you apply for through the bank is the actual amount that you are going to receive. Of course, once that loan has been re-paid, you can always re-apply for another loan.

What Are Trucking Factoring Companies?

Trucking Factoring companies do not give loans, and the money you get from the Trucking Factoring company does not put you in debt. Rather the financing you receive from a Trucking Factoring company is based on money your business has already earned, but have not yet received. The Trucking Factoring company purchases your accounts receivable, or part of them, for a certain percentage of their value - this is normally about 80-95%. The amount of finance you can receive will be based on the amount you have earned and the accounts receivable you are prepared to 'sell.' Once you have set up Trucking Factoring account it continues as long as you wish it too and the amount of money available to you even can grow as your business grows, giving you the ready cash you need to meet your own obligations.

What Are The Benefits Of A Trucking Factoring Company Versus A Traditional Bank Loan?

Not every business can benefit from Trucking Factoring account financing because you have to have a business with accounts receivable, however there are many benefits for those who can access this type of finance.

1. You Won't Incur Debt. Since the Trucking Factoring company actually buys your accounts receivable you don't actually incur debt like you do with a bank loan. This has many benefits including the fact, that this type of financing won't affect either your business credit rating or your personal credit rating. Should the unforeseeable happen and your business fails, you won't have to worry about anyone coming after your personal as well as your business assets to pay off a loan. The debt goes onto your credit report with a bank loan, with only one missed payment adversely affecting your business credit: it would also affect your ability to secure insurance, and may reflect on your personal credit rating as well.

2. No Collateral Required. Another benefit of using a Trucking Factoring company instead of a traditional loan is that you aren't required to provide collateral to the Trucking Factoring company in order to secure financing, because the company buys the accounts receivables; not loans you money based on them. Plus, the state of your credit rating is not an issue; however the Trucking Factoring company will run a credit check on your clients whose accounts receivable are being offered for financing. This means that it's easier for new businesses to access the finance they need through a Trucking Factoring company, providing their accounts receivable are in good order. A bank may believe you haven't been in business long enough to be able to cover this risk.

3. Receive Your Money Faster. Using a Trucking Factoring company means that you'll get the finance quicker. The money will normally be in your account within 24 hours, once the Trucking Factoring company is confident that your customers accounts are likely to be paid. Borrowing from a bank begins with vast amounts of paperwork, the loan must be underwritten, and this can take ages before you're notified if the loan has been approved.

4.Interest is Paid Up Front. Unlike a bank loan that continues to build interest that you have to pay the entire time you have your business loan with a Trucking Factoring company, you don't have to continue to pay interest as they take it right off the top, deducting it from the total amount of accounts receivable. So you don't have to worry about monthly loan repayments, and you don't have to worry about the amount of interest payable, because all the money in the account is yours to spend.

As you can see, there are several benefits that makes considering financing through a Trucking Factoring company over a traditional bank worthwhile. In addition, there are other benefits that a Trucking Factoring company can offer you, outside the scope of a bank. The main benefit is that once you've sold your accounts receivable to the Trucking Factoring company, you are free from having to collect money owed by your customers. Since these accounts belong to the Trucking Factoring company, this is now their job. Trucking Factoring companies are very efficient at debt collecting, and this frees up your valuable time to devote to running your company.

In addition, since the Trucking Factoring company evaluates the credit quality of your customers prior to purchasing the accounts receivable you gain valuable information into which customers are likely to pay and which ones are not so likely to pay. While a Trucking Factoring company is not the only way for your business to obtain the money it needs to keep growing, it does offer a type of financing well worth considering.
